On Monday March 24th, the Island School Science department welcomed Professor Sarah King from the University of Sussex for an exciting and stimulating lesson which she delivered to the Biology Elements students. Professor King is a neuroscientist who found her initial passion for Science at Island School which she attended in the 1980s and was in Da Vinci House! She had an inspirational Chemistry teacher, Mrs Boag who inspired her to study Science at University.
Her lesson involved a quick tour of the nervous system followed by a stimulating simulation of using electrodes and electrical impulses generated by muscles to operate a prosthetic hand.
After school, Professor King then spoke to the Island School medics club about her research which involves investigating memory in genetically modified mice as part of wider research into the causes and effects of Alzheimer’s disease.
