Sophos Academy: Supporting Those In Need

Public Photos / Files - IMG-20240315-WA0007 (1)

Sophos Academy is a student-led initiative founded by Aidan Lo (13N) in 2024 at the Island School, providing academic support and enrichment for underprivileged children and refugees through both in-person and virtual tutoring. The team focuses on building academic skills, confidence, and curiosity in STEM and other subjects. They achieve this through regular tutoring sessions, intensive holiday programs, and book readings from authors such as Ritu Hermani. Sophos Academy has also supported those in need by collaborating with NGOs such as Refugee Union (Hong Kong) and Step-Up (Myanmar), as well as securing a laptop donation worth HKD 100,000 through corporate sponsorship with Louis Vuitton.

In 2025, Sophos Academy’s volunteers collectively contributed enough service hours for Island School to receive the Jockey Club “Volunteer Together” Caring School Award. This recognises the school’s commitment to meaningful, student-driven community engagement. In addition, several Sophos Academy tutors were honoured with individual Jockey Club volunteer awards, highlighting the impact that Island School students are making beyond the classroom. We would like to congratulate the outstanding achievements of the following students for their dedication to service in action to the community.

  • Silver Award (100–299 hours): Aidan Lo (13N)
  • Bronze Awards (50–99 hours): Carlson Leung (13D), Toto Wong (13D), Hei Wong (13D), Alexis Ng (13R), Samuel Meerovitsch (13F), Carson Lo (12N)
