
On June 10th, our Year 7 students embarked on an out-of-this-world learning adventure for our annual Y7 STEM Day. The theme was 'Escape from Mars', where students worked in their evacuation teams to complete a series of hands-on challenges designed to help them gather resources, survive, and return safely from the red planet.
Throughout the day, students rotated through various activity stations set up around the school, each testing a different set of STEM skills. To successfully power and provision their rescue, students split into specialised sub-groups to tackle tasks like creating emergency oxygen in the science labs, building generators, programming Vex rovers, and designing custom rocket launch keys. The high-stakes day culminated with teams delivering an 'Elevator Pitch' and heading out onto the astroturf for a live rocket launch.
By the end of the event, students had effectively demonstrated their critical thinking, collaboration, and creative problem-solving skills. The competition was fierce as points were tallied for both task success and teamwork. The top seven teams were awarded prizes and the three teams with the highest points were as follows:
