Diwali Celebrations-October 23

Last few days marked the cultural celebration of Diwali-the Festival of Lights, to new beginnings and prosperity.

Island School was once again buzzing with the festivities and colours of the Diwali decorations in the campus. The campus was beautifully decorated with vibrant and culturally themed ethnic Diwali garlands. The decoration truly brought in the spirit of Diwali and the celebration to the campus. A big cheer for our lovely parent volunteers Anu, Archana, Celia, Ekta, Joanne, Joyce, Linh, Pooja B, Pooja D, Vanita and Culture Team students for their time and effort in putting up these decorations across the campus.

Parent volunteer Pooja B. shared the tips, tricks and techniques of Henna application during a Henna Painting Workshop for the student Culture Team. A big thank you to Pooja for dedicating her time in conducting the workshop and teaching useful and creative techniques to the students.

Photos for the decorations and workshop can be viewed HERE.

New Diwali events from last year become Island School traditions….

After last year’s popularity with the students and teachers, the Diwali Snack Sale made a return this year on October 22. Parent volunteers prepared and sold a variety of traditional sweet & savoury Indian snacks. There was North Indian sweet of Kaju Katli- thin slices made with cashew nuts, sugar and cardamom powder); Shakar Para (sweet snack made from dough of sugar, ghee/butter, flour and semolina); Dhoklas (steamed traditional savoury cake made with pulses), Mathri Sticks originating from Rajasthan (flaky biscuit), Chaklis originating from Maharashtra (spiral-shaped savoury snack made from rice flour and pulses) and last but not the least the ever popular and known Samosas! Thank you to our parent volunteers Dilruk, Fatema, Pia, Rahul, Rashida, Vindya & Zarrah for donating these lovely treats and bringing “a taste of Indian snacks” to Island School. Thank you to parent volunteers Anu, Archana, Christina, Elena, Fatema, Pia, Sean and Zainab, for helping organise and with the sales. All proceeds from the sales will go towards student-led projects and initiatives.

After the snack sale, we were in just for yet another one! We saw a comeback of our Diwali Parents’ Dance!

The inner courtyard was buzzing during lunch time on October 23 with Bollywood music and vibe with students, parents and teachers coming together to celebrate Diwali in style and hype! Island School parents dressed in ethnic and bright attire, performed a medley of Bollywood dances joined by Island School teachers and students with such joy that it truly felt ethnic and electric at the same time! A tradition that Island School PTA will continue…

We are very thankful to parents Anu, Kapila, Pooja B, Pooja D, Zainab and special mention to Angel and Anne for blending cultures. Thanks also to teachers Ms. Marmagne, Mr. Scott, Ms. Vittachi and student dancers for joining as well!

Here is the Album for you to enjoy and feel a part of the festivities!
