The Alliance is our strategic response to the challenges of the current global landscape. It is a student-centred vehicle that integrates their academic and personal capabilities to enable authentic and challenging activities that have an impact upon the world; both locally and further afield.

This week, we held the first Alliance Breakfast of the year, welcoming notable guests including ESF’s CEO Belinda Greer and Director of Education Mark Blackshaw, School Council members Alec Tong and Ali Ebrahim, as well as founding patrons James Wong and Anita Gidumal. We were also joined by alumni members Michael Lok (Barrister), Pindar Wong (Internet Pioneer), and Justin Sweeting (Clockenflap Co-Founder), along with many parents.
Global Council students Hannah Lam [13R], Luciano Suen [13D], and Dorottya Papp [13N] presented on the topic of AI in education, sparking engaging discussions throughout the room. They shared insights from their visit to Ho Chi Minh in August for the Asia Youth Forum, highlighting how other countries view the evolution of AI in education.
On June 14th we had our last Alliance Breakfast of the school year and was joined by guests which includes alumni, parents and friends of the school. The theme for the breakfast was “The Future of Education and how Tech such as AI plays into it”. A big thank you to Mr. Burrough and Mr. Sims for leading the presentation as well as our students speakers Tim Wang (10E) and Vijay Narayanan (10F) for sharing their learning experiences.
We hope the insights shared and the connections made at all the Breakfasts will greatly benefit our guests and we are excited to see the positive impact that the Alliance will have on Island School.
On 22 March, Island School hosted its second Alliance Breakfast of the school year where guests included Founding Patrons, alumni, parents and friends. It was an opportunity for our guests to all come together and discuss learnings from different industries. Students then went on to elaborate on projects they have been working on and how they plan to take it further.

At a breakfast attended by Founding Patrons, alumni, parents and friends, guests talked about opportunities for learning, on 25 November 2022.Students explained about their social change projects and explained how they have applied their knowledge and skills to real world situations.
Guests then discussed their role in developing the next generation of Islanders and what they can and want to do to maintain the school’s legacy.
During the breakfast, there were discussions around the tables about students’ projects: their role and the impact they are having, and why they have chosen a particular project.
Ross Burrough (Deputy Head of Curriculum) and Airi Tachino (12D) then discussed the importance of developing Competences through the curriculum and beyond it.
Mr Burroughs explained, “As a community we are moving beyond the traditional concept that a grade or number is a factor for success. At Island School our learning also focuses on competencies and transferable skills.
Airi then talked about how she has used her language skills to translate letters for refugees and the Graveyard Revitalization project. After visiting the Hong Kong Cemetery she discovered the many neglected graveyards belonging to Japanese foreign settlers. She reached out to the Japanese Embassy and the Hong Kong Japanese Club, and formed a group of volunteers who visit the cemetery regularly to maintain historic graves.
She said, “I think there is value in giving back to the community and looking at what is in the shadows. The true and ideal definition of volunteering, for me, is finding and pursuing what needs to be done, and slowly but surely treating it as casually as a pastime.”
In Head Student, Sam Hui’s, closing remarks he thanked the Patrons for supporting the next generation of Islanders and creating new opportunities, not previously thought possible.
Island School held its first Alliance* breakfast, on the 20 March 2019, where guests were encouraged to donate their time and expertise to support students.
The breakfast at the Hong Kong Club was made possible thanks to club member and parent Mr Ayaz Ebrahim. Guests, including parents, alumni and friends of the school heard from three Year 12 students and special guest speaker, alumna Mohammed Abdoolcarim, a tech entrepreneur and developer of “Siri” for the iphone.
Daanyal Ebrahim (12D), welcomed guests, introduced the Spirit Fund and explained what it means to be an Islander. Anya Saunders (12 W) spoke on behalf of the Plastic Retaskit project. A team of students, from Years 9-12, who are building four machines that will allow Island School to recycle waste plastic. She explained that with their machines they will be able to produce new products – which could be just about anything, cups, stationery or even office chairs. She called on guests to offer their advice and expertise to the project team.
Priscilla Lee (12F) talked about, a pitch winning idea, to develop a platform that turns calories burnt through exercise into video game credits. The concept for the platform was generated at a Nissan Infiniti workshop. At the workshop Nissan invited ESF student teams to think creatively, research, collaborate and develop pitches. Priscilla’s team pitch impressed the Nissan judges and won! Priscilla explained that she wants to make the platform a reality and ask the Alliance breakfast guests for help.
Mohammed Abdoolcarim, Einstein House Class of 1999, talked to guests about the changing world in terms of transport, stem cell growth and freedom of speech.
He said the problems of the future can be solved but, “They require the ability to organise a lot of different people at scale. They require breaking down of the old systems with bold ideas. They require strong leaders who care more about making a difference than making a dollar. It so happens that our future generations have all of these qualities and more in spades.”
“And as parents, teachers and friends we have a chance to provide this generation with support and skills to succeed in this new kind of world.”

Principal, Stephen Loggie in his closing remarks talked about the changing face of education and learning and explained more about the Alliance and what it strives to achieve.
