Hong Kong Young Physicists Tournament 2025

On Saturday 22nd February 2025, the Island School team took part in the 5th edition of the Hong Kong Young Physicists Tournament at West Island School. Having successfully passed the preliminary round in December, they were one of 14 teams from Hong Kong schools to have reached the final. They came up against some stiff competition including teams Po Leung Kuk, Victoria Shanghai Academy, Diocesan Boys School and the eventual winners in the Diocesan Girls School.

The final had an expanded format this year and each team took part in four “fights”. All four Island School team members either presented a Physics challenge or opposed another school. The challenges we presented included how heated oil can create Rayleigh–Bénard Convection Cells such as those seen on the surface of the sun.

Congratulations to Sunwoo Whang, Shafay Khan, Aden Honig and Aiden Lo, who all took home a Silver Medal. Special thanks as well to Arnav Gupta who did a fantastic job in mentoring the team and sharing his experience from the International Young Physicist Tournament that he participated in last year in Budapest.

Special thanks must go to Mr Angus Tong of the Physics Department for his unwavering support and his expertise in designing apparatus for the teams.
