WANBO are excited to announce the ESF City Nature Challenge. This annual event held at Island School is expanding to include all ESF schools and will run from the 25th of April to the 4th of May. This inter-school challenge has been designed to encourage our community to get outdoors and engage in nature and document the biodiversity around our great city of Hong Kong. The challenge is open to any student, staff member, or parent/family member to get involved. Student prizes will also be awarded for the most species recorded.
This citizen science challenge has been designed to support the annual global City Nature Challenge. This global bioblitz sees cities around the globe engaging in a collaboration-meets-friendly-competition to see who can document the most wildlife species in their cities. The data that we collect will support Hong Kong as it pitches itself against the likes of San Francisco, London, Cape Town, Sydney and Mumbai.
You can track how each ESF school is doing at this link.
To participate in this challenge, all you need to do is the following:
- Download the iNaturalist app on your mobile device.
- Set up an account and create a username.
- Join the Island School Project. If you do not join this, the data you collect will not go towards the challenge.
- Get outdoors and take pictures of nature (fungi, plants, birds, mammals, reptiles, etc) through the app. Please review the challenge rules of what you can and can’t take pictures of.
- Log your observations through the camera button and identify the species starring in the photo.
- Most importantly, please stay safe and read these guidelines before heading out into the wild!
More details of this challenge can be found on this website. If there are any questions, feel free to get in touch with @iswanbo. Have fun!
