On Wednesday, 7th May, the Y12 IB Career-related Programme students hosted a Street Photography exhibition with students from other ESF Secondary schools. Around 4 and a half months ago, we embarked on our Personal and Professional Skills Unit. This enabled us to understand key concepts such as intercultural understanding, social awareness, self expression, and ethics around photography.
We attended a Street Photography workshop at South Island School hosted by Michael Kistler, an inspiring street photographer whose work influenced us all. Our collective, newfound passion for photography was discovered during our first workshop with Michael. This experience not only taught us essential techniques but also enabled us to immerse ourselves in Hong Kong’s heritage and culture.
The photos that we selected fell under two categories. “Hong Kong People” - which laid significance to everyday encounters that encaptured the local spirit of the city; As well as “Hong Kong City”, which paid homage to photos that depict the underlying potential and charm of our city. Island School students took trips to Central, Sheung Wan and Wan Chai in order to capture shots for the exhibition, however many of us went off on our own adventures to take the perfect photo that successfully portrayed our perspective.

The Street Photography Exhibition was a brilliant opportunity to connect with other IBCP students and take inspiration from their own view of Hong Kong, potentially allowing us to look at our beautiful home in a new light. We would like to thank Mr Wilkinson and Ms Leung for all their help and support during this process, as well as to all the teachers who came to the exhibition.
