On March 7, Island School students attended the annual CodeHers event at GSIS. CodeHers is a student‑led movement that empowers young women to explore computer science and STEM in a supportive, inclusive environment.
Hannah Kwok (11RR) hosted a workshop introducing computational neuroscience — a multidisciplinary field combining biology, mathematics, theoretical modelling and computer science. Hannah reflected, “This was my first public‑speaking experience and it was very enjoyable to share a topic I’m passionate about. The event was an excellent way to connect with students from other schools who are interested in STEM. I’d highly recommend CodeHers to anyone curious about computer science — sessions cater to different skill levels, so everyone can find something accessible and engaging. Having attended CodeHers annually, I feel this year was the most valuable: I was honoured to host a workshop on computational neuroscience and to contribute back to the community.”

Other Student reflections:
-
Andrea Cheung (10DH): “As a first‑timer, I was surprised by how much I learned and the new people I met. The XP system was unique and really enhanced the experience.”
-
Sophiya Omar (10RF): “This was one of the most enjoyable and memorable workshops I’ve attended. The XP system helped me meet lots of new people, and the merch was a fun bonus. The sessions—especially on computational neuroscience—deepened my understanding of how the brain generates behaviour. I’d highly recommend attending next year’s event; beyond the giveaways, it’s a powerful way to empower girls in technology.”
