Last weekend, Island School hosted the third iteration of Island School MUN (ISLMUN) on January 18, welcoming over 350 student chairs and delegates from 21 schools. We had the honor of inviting two guest speakers: Mr. Gary Zhang, a member of the Hong Kong Legislative Council, and Ms. Americana Chen, the Youth Affairs Coordinator of UNESCO Hong Kong Association, to address the audience during the Opening and Closing ceremonies.

ISLMUN featured 11 committees, including the unique Historical United States Senate, the International Diplomacy and Intelligence Committee, and the International Criminal Court, the latter of which Island School is the second-ever school in Hong Kong to host.

Model United Nations is a public speaking activity where students represent delegations in the United Nations or regional parliaments to discuss and debate critical world issues, such as “The Indo-Pacific Tilt,” “Maritime Crime in the Indian Ocean,” and “The Israeli Invasion of Lebanon.” Throughout the two days, delegates deliberated and compromised to form resolutions, exercising communication, diplomacy, and critical thinking.

The executive board comprised Ava Au Yeung (Secretary General), Nicholas Tsang (Deputy Secretary General), Timothy Chan, Vijay Narayanan, Shlok Sharda, Parina Khiatani, Chloe Leung, and Hayley Chan, who worked for over four months to plan the conference. Special thanks go to our teacher supervisor, Ms. McPhee; we could not have organized this without her extensive guidance and support.

Again, thank you to all delegates, chairs, admins, photographers, and teacher supervisors who supported this event. We hope to see you next year at ISLMUN 4.0!
