Service Learning

Service learning is a vital component of the Island School experience, which is integrated into many aspects of school life. Students engage with service-oriented learning through the Explorations curriculum, and the Global Perspectives IGCSE course, which involves planning service projects. In the Diploma Program, CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) provides further opportunities for personal growth and contribution to the community.

Our commitment to service extends to extracurricular activities (ECAs), House events and charity weeks, projects with local schools, and Quest Week opportunities focused on both community and environment. This comprehensive approach ensures that we are nurturing students who are genuinely committed to making a positive impact and creating lasting change.

Our House charity weeks are of particular significance, with our Houses prioritising the proceeds from events such as bake sales, relay runs, carnivals, and teacher events with the following charities:

  • Da Vinci House: Crossroads Foundation
  • Rutherford House: Impact HK
  • Wilberforce House: Chickensoup Foundation
  • Fleming House: Hong Kong Children’s Cancer Foundation
  • Nansen House: Baiwan Charity
  • Einstein House: Katja House

Island School has longstanding partnerships with three major charities:

  • Nicola and Kenneth Bursaries: This program, in memory of two former students who passed away over 30 years ago, provides $3,000 bursaries to financially disadvantaged students, enabling them to continue their education.
  • Baiwan Community School Charity: Founded in 1998 after an Island School teacher connected with Sunbeam Children’s Foundation, this charity supports a school in Baiwan through fundraising, resource donations, and English teaching.
  • Katja House, Nepal: Established nearly 30 years ago following a student and staff trip to Nepal, this partnership supports an orphanage and home for street children in Kathmandu. Island School continues to support Katja House through annual visits and ongoing support.

These partnerships have a tremendous impact on both the beneficiaries and Island School students, fostering global awareness and demonstrating the power of personal action.
