 Extra-Curricular Activities

The Extra-Curricular Activities (ECA) program is an integral aspect of life and learning at Island School. A wide range of activities are offered, under the broad categories of creativity, leadership, service, and sport. These experiences encourage self-discovery and empowerment as students can choose to embrace new interests and pursue their passions. This can serve to consolidate and extend the learning that happens ‘in the classroom’, supporting students in their endeavours to be the best that they can be.

ECAs represent an invaluable opportunity for students to connect, collaborate and forge meaningful friendships. This supports them in their quest to develop global competencies, as this form of experiential learning can cultivate communication, critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, character, and citizenship.

In 2022-23, driven by our commitment to the student experience, student leaders conducted a comprehensive review of our ECA program. This review, informed by parent and student surveys, resulted in significant enhancements, including a substantial expansion of ECA offerings and the implementation of a new preference-based allocation system using dedicated software.

One significant development from the review was the introduction of an elite sports program in basketball, swimming, and volleyball. This further supports our student-athletes through access to expert coaching, multiple weekly training sessions, regular competition throughout the year and specialized strength and conditioning with a professional instructor.

Sports

At Island School, we believe that sport can play an influential role in student and community development. Our extensive competitive sports program provides opportunities for our “Typhoons” teams to compete in HKSSF and ISSFHK federations, which includes athletics, swimming, cross-country, basketball, football, rugby, netball, badminton, tennis, hockey, rowing, table tennis, fencing and much more. Our elite sports program also offers weekend club competition throughout the year.

We believe that enduring both successes and failures through sport, effectively builds confidence, resilience, teamwork, etiquette and leadership, and a strong sense of community and belonging.

Our state-of-the-art campus features excellent sports facilities, including a 25m indoor heated pool, double sports hall, astroturf pitch, fitness and weight training area, climbing wall, and two outdoor multi-purpose pitches.

Creative Arts

Performing arts are an integral part of the Island School experience. Through our established arts program, students explore a wide-range of artistic disciplines, from dramatic performance and musical expression to visual arts and design.

Annual whole-school productions are a highlight of the year, providing opportunities for students to collaborate across year groups, develop teamwork and communication skills, as well as showcasing their talents on stage. Additionally, we have our ‘STARS’ event, which is a singing competition, and ongoing musical performances which celebrate individual and collective musical achievements. We also have visual art exhibitions and displays, which provide a further platform for students to showcase their creativity, technical skills, and unique artistic perspectives.

These diverse opportunities not only build creativity and self-expression but also equip students with confidence and improved communication skills, while also cultivating a deeper appreciation for the arts.

STEM

At Island School, we want to inspire and nurture future innovators and problem-solvers. STEM education—covering Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics—is a key part of our students' growth. The engaging and hands-on learning experiences in our program are designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in a rapidly evolving world.

Our STEM program includes a variety of initiatives. For students in Years 7-9, we offer dedicated STEM Days, which feature inquiry-based projects and learning opportunities. The student-led STEM Committee provides a platform for peer learning, collaboration, and the development of student-led initiatives. The STEM Extracurricular Activity (ECA) allows for deeper exploration into specific fields. The Elements program permits students to pursue their individual STEM interests and explore real world applications outside the constraints of the formal curriculum. Together, these interconnected programs present a wide range of opportunities to enhance students’ understanding of STEM concepts, develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and prepare them for future academic and professional pursuits.
